The narrative of these mills is directly linked to the cocoa industry in Castro Laboreiro and was chosen by the Chocolate Factory of Castro Laboreiro ("Carabel") in 1946 to produce the chocolate so famous in the region. To date, the reasons why Domingos António Alves, founder of the company, decided to manufacture this delicious product are unknown, but it is said that such work has raised Castro Laboreiro to another level of visibility in this region of Portugal.
After his death, the children Abilio and Germano proceeded with their father's business by making both a direct sale in his store in Castro Laboreiro and selling at fairs held throughout the region. It was one of these fairs in 1920 that Germano met his wife, Aurora, the beautiful widow of Melgaço who, at the pilgrimage of Our Lady of Peneda, on the pretext of buying chocolate to offer his family and friends, visited the brothers Carabel. Being at the end of the fair, Germano and Abilio would not have enough chocolate to satisfy Aurora's request and Germano promised that as soon as they had produced more, he would have taken the order to Aurora. This gesture was kept in the esteem of the beautiful widow who, on December 25 of that same year, joined in marriage with Germano.
The Moinhos do Poço Verde comes on the scene when it is verified that the cost of the use of the coal for the production of chocolate becomes too high and the hydraulic energy provided by the mills solved such problem, however, there are some difficulties of access of raw materials to the mills. Therefore, and from that date, the Green Pole Mills were used for the extraction, production and transformation of cocoa. Part of the building still retains elements of that was such as grinding mills used for crushing cocoa beans and the levadas and existing waterways beneath the chalets used to move the mill.
